Polish Abstract: Brzmienia miast, czyli charakterystyczne style muzyczne specyficzne dla danego ośrodka miejskiego ksztaltowaly amerykanską muzyke juz od samego początku jej istnienia. Przykladami tego zjawiska byly na przyklad New Orleans Jazz, Nashville Sound, czy w muzyce rockowej Seattle Sound i San Francisco Sound. Za kolejny z nich mozna takze uznawac Palm Desert Scene, znany rowniez jako desert rock – specyficzny podgatunek muzyki rockowej związany ze sceną artystyczną miasta Palm Desert. Za jego glownych przedstawicieli uznawani są kolektyw Desert Sessions, czy zespoly Kyuss i Queens of the Stone Age. Celem mojego wystąpienia bedzie analiza desert rocka w kontekście ksztaltującej sie teorii brzmienia miasta. Charakterystyke tego zjawiska opre na trzech filarach, bedących tematem przewodnim konferencji: dźwieku, slowie i performansie. Wszystkie te elementy są nierozerwalnie związane z lokalną rzeczywistością, ktora wplywa na warstwe muzyczną, tekstową, a u genezy podgatunku takze performatywną. Poprzez kulturową analize obejmującą tworczośc najwazniejszych przedstawicieli Palm Desert Scene zaprezentowane zostaną wnioski mowiące o ścislym i nierozerwalnym związku miejsca z omawianym podgatunkiem rocka. English Abstract: City sound, which is the characteristic musical style developed in specific American cities played a key role in evolving popular music since its beginning. Examples of such process include New Orleans Jazz, Nashville Sound, Seattle Sound or San Francisco Sound. One may treat Palm Desert Scene – known also as the desert rock, specific subgenre of rock, which originated in the city of Palm Desert, CA – as a contemporary case of such process. Most popular representatives of this style include Kyuss or Queens of the Stone Age. The main objective of this paper is to culturally analyze desert rock’s genesis in context of “city sound” theoretical concept, which is based on the assumption that the city itself influences artistic vision of music scene’s participants. The case study of desert rock included lyrics, music, and its performative aspect. All of these elements are inseparably connected to local history and reality, which shaped this subgenre, making it one of its kind. This research leads to the assumption that Palm Desert Scene (or desert rock) can be considered as the model example of city sound.
