ResumoGeneric drugs were created in order to reduce the costs of pharmacological treatments. In Brazil, they were officially instituted in 1999 as a clear way to fulfill the access to health rights brought by the 1988 Constitution. Thus, it is important to evaluate the effectiveness of this policy. The assessment of the degree of acceptance of generic drugs is a valid measure for this, since it verifies the knowledge that consumers have about such drugs, especially in relation to their efficacy and safety, and if they are favored because they have lower costs. Thus, in order to carry out a synthesis on the studies already created regarding this theme, it was decided to perform a bibliographic review. The researched works allow us to carry out relevant reflections and to verify the growth in the prevalence of the use of generic drugs well, conclude that the degree of acceptance of such pharmaceutical forms has been largely due since its implementation. The excellent result observed is due to several factors, well-structured regulation, a guarantee of quality of generics, lower prices and a policy to promote generic drugs.
