‘[T]hat Other Great Poet’: Double Falsehood , The Arden Shakespeare, and Further Evidence for Fletcher

In the preface to the 1728 edition of Double Falsehood, Theobald remarks on some of the objections that were raised against his claims for presenting an original Shakespeare play. One objection came from those who found that ‘the play may have some resemblances of Shakespeare, yet the colouring, diction and characters come nearer to the style and manner of Fletcher’.1 Regardless of the obscure nature of Theobald’s alleged manuscripts, two pieces of external evidence suggest that there might be some truth behind his claims: (i) the court’s treasurer’s accounts of payments made to John Heminges for two performances by the King’s Men in 1613 entitled ‘Cardenno’ and ‘Cardenna’;2 and (ii) Humphrey Moseley’s 1653 Stationers’ Register entry for ‘The History of Cardenio, by Mr Fletcher. & Shakespeare’.3 Several studies of the early twentieth century have highlighted Fletcher’s stylistic features in the play, identifying his hand as more...
