Resumo

General medical practitioners, pharmacists, health visitors, dentists and parents of young children were the target groups in a pilot study for a campaign to encourage the use of sugar-free, in preference to sugar-containing medicines. Eye-catching leaflets and posters explaining the advantages of sugar-free medicines were distributed to the target groups in two Family Health Services Authorities (FHSAs). Two matched FHSAs acted as controls. The campaign was evaluated by collecting data on numbers of prescriptions and sales of commonly used paediatric medicines. The views of pharmacists were also sought. Postgraduate meetings were well attended by pharmacists and health visitors, but not the doctors. Prescription data showed that the campaign had been successful in one of the test areas. The campaign raised awareness of sugar-free alternatives for many paediatric medicines.
