Resumo

The current memory clashes perceived in the nowadays city of Campo do Meio, Minas Gerais, are consequences of the land expropriation of the former Ariadnópolis sugarcane factory, that, since 1996 has become a camp for the Movimento dos Sem-Terra -MST, after the bankruptcy of the enterprise, which established a conflict between the former owners and employees fired without labor assistance. This paper proposes to think about the construction of memory in sugar production, to understand the use of the past in social fights and contemporary politics.Through contemporary and previous decade reports, an analysis of a "History seen from below" is performed, inserting yet the discussion in the field of History of the present time. Thus, the different appropriations of the speeches built from the memory of the Ariadnópolis sugarcane factory are reappropriated for the legal (and socials) clashes as one, for the right of the land possession and also for the legitimation of an official speech of the city history.
