Resumo

The influence of the Encyclopédie on illustrated books in Portugal : Casa Literária do Arco do Cego (1799-1802) The aim of this article is to show the role of Casa Literária do Arco do Cego, a Portuguese publishing house at the end of the eighteenth century, which enjoyed Royal patronage, and in which the publication of illustrated books figured prominently. The article explains the integrated working process of the various workshops of the House, focusing particularly on the role of image in the editorial process, which was used not to embellish luxury editions, but for didactic purpose. In this context, special attention was paid to the visual sources which served as models, highlighting the major and direct influence of the French Encyclopédie, namely through the copies of the planches of Panckoucke’s version.
