ResumoAs societies of people, cooperatives aim to increase members’ incomes—through the economic organization of their productive systems—and, in the long run, to achieve balanced social progress. Social benefits are at the heart of cooperatives, which have as one of their principles the interest in the communities, aiming at their sustainable development. This paper deals with the insertion of social advancement as a critical success factor in a model of translation and control of strategy in agro-industrial cooperatives, in the context of the reality of Paraná-Brazil. Based on the theoretical background on translation and control of strategy and cooperative organizations, interviews were conducted with experts on cooperative movement, followed by an instrumental case study in an agro-industrial cooperative. Several interactions that social advancement maintains with other factors of the strategic management model in agro-industrial cooperatives are discussed. It is concluded that such a model should consider social advancement as a critical success factor, related to the control lever of strategy as Perspective, concerning to the beliefs and core values of this type of organization, which refers to the importance of the doctrine and principles of cooperative movement, as pillars of the sustainability of the cooperative system. Furthermore, social advancement appears also related with the control levers of Positioning and Planning.
