The aim of this paper is to deal with some preliminary questions about the relationship between art and society / politics in Walter Benjamin's essay The work of art in the era of the reproductible technique.According to Benjamin, the objective of his essay is to elucidate the social function of art in the contemporary days (ADORNO, T.; BENJAMIN, W.; HABERMAS, J.; HORKHEIMER, M.; 1980).However, do we need to have a previous concept of what is a work of art to be able to evaluate its social function?In order to answer with a refusal to this question, we will analyze the relationship between art and technique in some greek thinkers,
