ResumoThe main purpose of Jocelyn C. Zuckerman's book is to build awareness of the drawbacks of a product that became ubiquitous despite creating massive social, environmental and corruption problems. Zuckerman shows that palm oil stands centre stage in ‘the Global Syndemic: the combined twenty-first-century crises of obesity, malnutrition, and climate change’ (p. 17). Her book unveils the linkages between apparently innocent daily products, for instance Nutella and soap, and major problems such as deforestation, pollution, diseases and human exploitation, as well as historical atrocities including slavery, colonial land grabs, biopiracy and monopolistic imperialism. Planet palm is the outcome of years of fearless journalistic reporting about the palm oil global production chain.
