ResumoWhat is Iran? seeks to provide a bold account of the enduring estrangement between Iran and the United States by focusing on the revolutionary roots of Iranian foreign and domestic politics. Arshin Adib-Moghaddam grounds his analysis within a sound description of Iran's internal politics and scrutinizes the existing discourse on Iranian foreign policy through a new approach which he calls ‘discursive musicology’ (p. 17). Discursive musicology frames the complex issues of world politics in an innovative way that will appeal to many readers. Through five musical pieces, Adib-Moghaddam offers a unique perspective on Iran's politics in the region and beyond. The author uses these five works––Richard Strauss's ‘Also sprach Zarathustra’ (1896), Riza Rooygari's ‘Iran, Iran, Ragbar-e Mosalsalha’ (1979), Alireza Assar and Foad Hejazi's ‘Vatan’ (2005), ‘Ye Mosht Sarbaz’ (2008) by Hichkas and ‘Moqawem’ (2017) by Julia Boutros––to connect discourse and music in order to provide a dense and mesmerizing understanding...
