Spanish Abstract: El artículo analiza el establecimiento y el devenir de las parroquias, de acuerdo a las diferentes normativas canónicas y reales, así como a factores eclesiásticos, políticos, sociales y económicos de cada obispado de Hispanoamérica y Filipinas. Además de desempeñar un papel insustituible en la expansión del cristianismo entre los indios, la parroquia fue la entidad eclesiástica más tangible y cotidiana en la vida de los pobladores de los dominios españoles de ultramar. La principal variante son las doctrinas de indios, administradas por las órdenes religiosas. Un actor central para entender el devenir jurídico de las parroquias fue el real patronato, debido al amplio conjunto de leyes reales que buscaron regir el carácter de las parroquias, los alcances y los límites de sus tareas, así como la disciplina de los párrocos. En este artículo se estudian los aspectos básicos que las configuraron: su definición jurídica, formación de nuevas parroquias, las doctrinas de indios, bienes y derechos parroquiales, definición de párroco, su provisión, sus obligaciones y prerrogativas, coadjutores y vicarios. English Abstract: The article analyzes the establishment and ulterior development of the parishes, according to different canonical and royal regulations, but also to ecclesiastical, political, social, and economic factors of each bishopric of Hispanic America and the Philippines. The parish was a very important institution for the spread of Christianity among the Indians. It was also the most tangible and daily ecclesiastical entity in the lives of the inhabitants of the Spanish overseas dominions. The main variant is found in the doctrines of Indians, administered by religious orders. A central actor to understand the legal evolution of the parishes was the royal patronage, due to the wide set of royal laws that would seek to record their character, the scope and limits of their tasks, as well as the discipline of the parish priests. This article studies the basic aspects outlined here: its legal definition, formation of new parishes, the doctrines of Indians, goods and parish rights, definition of parish priest, its provision, its obligations and prerogatives, coadjutors and vicars.
