ResumoIn this paper, we analyze the disputes over civil law reforms in Brazil involved in the process of secularization of political institutions at the turn of the 20th century. We carried out a content analysis of the information contained in the bronze sculpture plates affixed to Praca Paris in Rio de Janeiro, which honor three jurists involved in the struggles for the secularization of civil laws (marriage and affiliation): Clovis Bevilaqua (1859-1943), Cândido Mendes de Almeida Filho (1866-1939) and Affonso Celso de Assis Figueiredo Junior, Count Affonso Celso (1860-1938). We extended to the republican period the observation of the permanence of the “religious question”, treated by historiography as an isolated fact that occurred during the imperial government in 1873. The legal culture that underlies the modernization of civil legislation within the framework of the domains of political ideas and feelings presents itself framed by religious culture; this is the heart of our hypothesis.
