Resumo

Mobility is a vehicle for social inclusion and participation. People with an intellectual disability have difficulty moving about independently due to multiple factors (cognitive, emotional, environmental, etc.). In this article, we examine how adolescents and young adults with an intellectual disability learn to move about. More specifically, we will look at the spatial knowledge that people can acquire when they explore an environment (knowledge of landmarks, knowledge of routes, knowledge of configuration). We will review the studies that have answered this question using, most often, virtual environments. We will also discuss the regulatory mechanisms involved in route-learning situations (self-regulation versus other-regulation) and aids that can promote learning. Finally, research avenues on the influence of social stimuli and the development of technological aids will be presented.
