ResumoColorectal cancer is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and women in the United States, and in 2002, an estimated 107,300 new cases of colon cancer will have occurred. Despite these statistics, mortality from colon cancer has decreased over the past 30 years, possibly because of earlier diagnosis through screening and better treatment modalities. The NCCN clinical practice guidelines for managing colon cancer discuss these advances and provide a comprehensive management algorithm.
