Resumo

Fighters use dehydration strategies before competitions to reduce weight and gain an advantage over their opponent, which can be detrimental to their health and performance. This study aimed to assess the hydration status and correlate with the weight loss strategies used by Jiu-Jitsu competitors in the city of Fortaleza-CearAi. To analyze the hydration level, urine samples were collected from the participants before a training and a competition, the athletes' weights were measured before and after a training and a competition. Two questionnaires were applied to characterize hydration practices and pre-competition weight loss strategies. Most of the fighters analyzed were men (90.91%), average age of 30.18 (± 7.66) years, average pre-workout weight of 82.66 (± 13.15) kg, weight loss during the training of 0.73 (± 0.63) kg and 81.81% of the athletes were classified as hypo hydrated on training days. On the day of the competition, the prevalence of hypohydration was 68.42%, the pre-competition weight was 82.25 (± 14.11) kg, with no significant difference in relation to the pre-training weight (p=0,7987). There was no significant correlation between the weight loss strategies used by athletes and the hydration status on a competition day (rs=0.011; p=0.967). It is concluded that the fighters have inadequate hydration habits both during training and competition periods, thus emphasizing the importance of nutritional education activities to reduce the losses caused by dehydration.
