ResumoAbstract Cantaloupes were planted 18 Dec ’84 in Inarajan in plots consisting of two 9 m rows, 1.2 m apart. Plots were 2 m apart. Six hills were planted in each row at even spacing. Experimental design was a randomized complete block with 4 replications. Plots were sprayed to the drip point with insecticides with a backpack sprayer twice a week beginning 15 Jan. Once a week, all plots were sprayed with Benlate (1 tsp/gal) to prevent downy mildew. Sticker, Triton B-1956 was applied with all treatments. It was observed that the naturally occurring thrips infestation was very low, so on 12 Feb all plots were artificially infested with thrips. Five heavily infested cucumber leaves were placed within the foliage of each plot. On 19 Mar thrips were sampled by randomly selecting 20 tips per plot, removing the tenth leaf from the tip and counting the thrips. All yields were harvested.
