Resumo

In the process of geographic training of basic education students, the use of didactic resources related to cartographic learning helps in the processes of localization and spatial understanding, with the textbook being an important teaching tool in this process. Thus, this article analyzed the approach of cartographic content in geography textbooks used in 6th grade classes of elementary school, at the Dom Jose Adelino Dantas State School, located in the Walfredo Gurgel neighborhood, a peripheral area of the city of Caico/ RN, in the northeastern semiarid region of Brazil. Thus, the analysis of the books “Tempo de Geografia”, organized by Jurandyr Ross and Axe Silva, in 2019, and “Geografia Critica”, written by Jose Willian Vessentini and Vânia Vlach, in 1995, used by the aforementioned classes for cartographic discussions. Thus, from this analysis of the highlighted textbooks, the importance of the aforementioned teaching material for the teaching-learning process was evident, since in educational institutions with less access to Information and Communication Technologies, such as the In the case of the aforementioned School, located in a peripheral area of a city in the semiarid region of the Northeast, the use of textbooks has great relevance, serving, therefore, as an important teaching tool for the spatial understanding of elementary school students, arising from cartographic language.
