The success of site-specific N management will depend on our ability to predict or control these dynamic soil and crop processes. This chapter reviews our current understanding of variable plant-soil N dynamics within two major U.S. cropping systems and assesses the implications of these dynamics for prospects of site-specific N management. The two cropping systems in which the potential benefits and limitations of site-specific N management have been explored are: the Inland Pacific Northwest dryland wheat and the Minnesota dryland corn cropping systems. Yield responses to applied N vary across landscapes due to differences in non-fertilizer N supplies and to differences in N use efficiency. The processes that influence N availability in the wheat growing regions of eastern Washington also impact N availability for corn production in Minnesota. References Bell, J.C., C.A.
