This article assumes that the collections of a museum define it as such and museum documentation is an activity on which all others are based or should be based. In the last decades of the 20th century, this premise was defended by many authors in the context of the debate on the automation of the documentation of museum collections. A literature review carried out provides an overview of museological documentation, on issues related to the documentation activity of collections in a digital environment and on the specificity of the documentation of Science and technology collections. An account of the experience of Museu de Astronomia e Ciencias Afins with the digitization of its collection and database is presented.
