Resumo

Results of a research shows an understanding of the categorical variation of the lexical “caralho” item in Brazilian Portuguese. The study was guided by assumptions from Cognitive Sociolinguistics, in such a way that it dialogues with authors like Almeida (2016), Lakoff (1987), Rosch (1978), Santos e Lins (2016), Silva (2012). Regarding its methodological design, the study was developed through a qualitative approach to the corpus, which formed by posts Yahoo Answers site; it had an exploratory, descriptive, interpretative nature and sought to understand the occurrences in its context of use. After completing the research, it was found that this word may or may not be categorized as a bad word, but in this category, its degree of prototypicity depends on who uses it.
