Shnayerson neither glosses over Siegel’s behavior nor claims completely visionary status for him. Bugsy Siegel: The Dark Side of the American Dream analyzes Siegel in often vivid and stylish prose. It offers valuable information about Siegel, his colleagues (legitimate and otherwise), and his milieu. It tries to unpack the convoluted story of whose idea the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas was and how Siegel ended up running it. Unfortunately, the book also falls short, historically and analytically.
