ResumoRecalling the 800th anniversary of the martyrdom in Morocco, this study discusses the artistic strategies that contributed to the dissemination of the Franciscan message in Portugal, focusing on the example of the Venerable Third Order of Saint Francis in Coimbra. It develops, therefore, an analysis of the 18th century tiles covering the walls of the chapel erected by the Brothers of the Penitence on the banks of the Mondego, paying special attention to the text/image relations, as the ceramic pieces combine figurative elements and inscriptions. It is also drawn an intertextual reading that compares the painted scenes with the legendary testimonies divulged by oral tradition, aiming to demonstrate how Franciscan propaganda made use of the logo-iconic language popularized by Baroque culture in order to accomplish the purposes of religious pedagogy and self-exaltation.
