Henry James e a criação literária em “Greville Fane” e “A Morte do Leão”

RESUMO: Empenhado em tornar a criacao literaria um objeto de discussao, Henry James escreveu uma serie de textos criticos em que lanca luz a tarefa desafiadora dos romancistas. O autor, porem, nao estava alheio ao esquema mercadologico do qual a literatura fazia parte. Esses obstaculos, por sua vez, foram transformados em ficcao. A fim de explorar o dialogo entre a producao critica e literaria de James por meio da figura do personagem-escritor, pretende-se aqui analisar os contos “Greville Fane” (1892) e “A morte do leao” (1894), publicados, respectivamente, na The Illustrated London News e na The Yellow Book. Ao se apropriarem de formas diferentes do proposito de cada revista, os textos buscam problematizar o meio literario finissecular. ABSTRACT: Committed to turning literary creation into an object of discussion, Henry James wrote a series of critical texts which throw light on novelists’ challenging work. The author, however, was not dismissive of the market rules that literature was subject to; instead, he transformed these obstacles into fiction. In order to explore the dialogue between James’s critical and literary production through the image of writer-characters, this paper analyzes the short stories “Greville Fane” (1892) and “The Death of the Lion” (1894), published in The Illustrated London News and The Yellow Book respectively. Having appropriated the purpose of each magazine in different ways, both texts seek to problematize the literary milieu in the end of nineteenth century.
