In 1987 Rick Rubin produced the Less Than Zero movie soundtrack, an album that was foundational for the directions U.S. popular culture took in the 1990s. The album included songs like “Bring Da Noise” by Public Enemy, LL Cool J’s “Going back to Cali,” and an “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” cover by Slayer. This was also the venue where Glenn Danzig launched his post-Samhain career. The collection of music brought unexpected tones to a Hollywood film about wealthy college students. The following year Rubin oversaw a string of albums like Run DMC’s Tougher than Leather, Slayer’s South of Heaven, Public Enemy’s It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, as well as Danzig I. The book Rez Metal seeks to recognize such cultural intervention in the Navajo nation.
