This article aims to understand the practices and strategies of the Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora do Rosario and Sao Benedito dos Homens Pretos in the 18th century, especially with regard to the period when the church of the Brotherhood was subordinated to the Cabido da Se in Rio de Janeiro, from the years 1737 to 1808. This study focuses on the conflicts and disputes that arose between the two institutions in theBrotherhoods’search for independence and devotional rituals practiced by the Brotherhood,within the autonomy of their church. The authors will demonstrate how the relationship between the Brotherhood and other powerful authorities such as the judicial and ecclesiastical institutions was developed, in this same period.
