ResumoIn the Knowledge-Based Economy, a system where knowledge is the true essence of competitiveness and the engine of long-term development, education is not limited to institutionalized training, but requires lifelong learning, which is being built outside educational institutions, especially in the most avant-garde companies, which consider it a fundamental asset for their development and growth. Companies participate in the creation of knowledge, since a characteristic of the Knowledge-Based Economy is the diversity of actors. Higher Education Institutions (HEI) are also bridges of interaction between the various factors of economic activity, providing the human resources that the labor market demands. This chapter outlines the case of Teléfonos de México (Telmex) and its Corporate University (Technological Institute of Teléfonos de México, Inttelmex), which since 1990 has undertaken an arduous process of technological modernization and training of its human resources, in order to provide them with labor competencies, and allow them to face the challenge of global competitiveness and the development of new telecommunications services in an emerging economy within the Pacific Rim. We conclude that education and the development of labor competencies are not the sole responsibility of HEIs. It is a responsibility shared with employers and governments, through education policies, international organizations, and agreements, to consolidate programs that guide countries to generate equity on local, national, and international level.
