ResumoBiographical sketches are given for several women who made early contributions to the science of geology. They are Martine de Bertereau, Baroness de Beausoleil, ca. 1602–1640; Mary Ann Anning, 1799–1847; Elizabeth Philpot, 17807–1857: Erminnie Adele Piatt Smith, 1836–1886; Ida H. Ogilvie, 1874–1963; Mignon Talbot, 1869–1950; Carlotta J. Maury, 1874–1938; and Elizabeth Florette Fisher, 1873–1941. A short biography of Inge Lehmann, b. 1888, is also included as a more recent example of a woman who has made a notable contribution to a geological field.
