ResumoThe political turmoil associated with the so-called Age of Liberty (1718-72) - which coincided with the height of the Enlightenment Movement in Continental Europe - changed the intellectual landscape of Sweden. Modern natural science challenged the ancient scholastic traditions of the universities. The sometimes tumultuous political life made it possible for able men of relatively humble - or even nonnoble - origin to gain influence on matters of state. These men were often associated with the emerging class of wealthy merchants that called for practical and applied research, preferably based on the solid theoretical foundations provided by the new natural science.
