Her deep understanding of meaning of Prejean's work and poetry allowed Heggie to compose this beautiful cycle.In his notes, Heggie says the breaking wave-a breaking sense of clarity, awareness and trust-became big theme for cycle. Underlying-and perhaps preparing for-this epiphany is sense of waiting that permeates each poem. Advent leads us into winter and darkness-God waitin' time. In Darkness we wait with trees that shed their leaves, hover, they abide, they become/ Mystics full of God. We too know that darkness is The inward place, where miracles begin. Everything in darkness waits for coming of light.Music tells of man on death row. waits for death, but is brought back to the land of living night he listened to music all night long. He drank music like a thirsty man. Prejean, his spiritual counselor and friend writes, felt his joy. I feel it still. Return finds poet waiting for My just-right with her bodyboard ready for thrilling ride to shore. wave that comes, however, is Huge and towering/ Green, translucent and crashes over her and swallows her up, engulfing with no escape. Then awareness breaks into consciousness: But, oh, I can breathe here/ Even here ... I am alive.These profound texts are beautifully set to music that gives a sense of waiting, hovering, abiding in mysteries of darkness and water. …
