Resumo

The calculus of variations is central to modern mathematics, with its applications extending to science, technology and economics. In these polemical treatises, edited and annotated by Herman Goldstine, one of the inventors of the modern computer, we see the Bernoulli brothers demonstrating how variation problems, dealing with questions of maximization and minimization of mathematical and physical properties and processes, can be methodically formulated, thus making meaningful answers possible.
