ResumoParathyroid hormone (PTH) is an 84-amino-acid polypeptide hormone that plays a key role in the regulation of ionized calcium and phosphate in the blood and extracellular fluids. It binds to and signals through a G protein-coupled receptor, the PTH-1 receptor, on bone and kidney cells. The first 34 amino acids of PTH determine its biological activity. Abnormalities in PTH secretion or action result in hypercalcemia or hypocalcemia; PTH can have anabolic effects on bone and thus holds promise for the treatment of osteoporosis.
