ResumoThe rapidly growing population of Hong Kong, especially in the North West New Territories, requires a new, high capacity railway system to cater for the expected level of transport demand. West Rail was conceived in 1994 as a result of the Hong Kong Government Railway Development Strategy which determined that a new railway was required. Final authorization was given in September 1998 for the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) to proceed with the construction of West Rail. Construction began in October 1998 and the system will open for revenue operation in December 2003. The background and current progress are described.
