Resumo

Many of the sayings attributed to philosophers, wise man and educators in classical antiquity, sayings that memory has selected and history preserved, have been valued not just for their inspiring ethical content but also for the specific forms of expression in which they are framed. They were used by ancient grammarians and rhetoricians as sugestive models of linguistic and literary articulation to inculcate in the minds of their students the first seeds of artistic sensibility, and to help in rehearsing the first steps in the complex world of rhetorical conventions. But their manipulation or elaboration was intended also to teach the disciple the laws which govern the life of a good citizen, not just as a vague ideal of personal realization, but also as a moral and religious duty that point toward the consumate performance of the common welfare. The form of the chreia established the pattern which graded the exercises and trained the student in the rhetorical techniques of inuentio and dispositio; its content instilled principles and values which would progressively inform his character and temper his conduct. And thus, the process from the elaboration of a simple chreia to the whole composition of a persuasive discourse involved the natural development of its argumentative structure, which already contained the essential seeds of a consumate literary art.
