ResumoFrom 1980 to 1982, the benthic macroinvertebrates of the Júcar river (Central East Spain) were sampled at 32 sites, from the head waters to the mouth.Ten species of Grastropoda and one of Bivalvia were identified and the distribution of these is given. Both in the lower reaches and in the least steep stretches of the river most of the species ocurred more frequently, and diversity (H') increased downstream.Sites were grouped together by cluster analysis and compared with the different runnig-water zonations proposed by various authors.Distribution patterns are explained in relation to the longitudinal development of the river and are discussed according to the different interpretations, given for the river ecosystemes.
