ResumoA book on the stardom of international celebrity actor Charlotte Gainsbourg is a timely addition to French star studies. While global visibility for French stars is hardly new, Gainsbourg is one of the more recognizable figures working in the (trans)national cinema today and her fame in other cultural spheres, notably as a singer and fashion icon, is also a logical focus for Felicity Chaplin’s avowedly transmedia analysis. The first two thirds of the monograph are divided into chapters, organized roughly chronologically, dealing with Gainsbourg’s early roles in international auteur cinema and public exposure through her father Serge’s notorious music video for ‘Lemon Incest’ and film (as well as song and album) Charlotte for Ever (1986); the amplified popular domestic stardom engendered by her autofictional collaborations with her film-director husband Yvan Attal, and especially the star couple’s celebrity; and the controversies surrounding the three films she made with Lars von Trier...
