ResumoSneaker-makers say sales are soaring, thanks to designers, retailers and stylists who are embracing the look for spring. "After years of heavy, clunky athletic shoes, women are coming back to cleaner, more feminine lines," says Barbara Scott of Keds Corp., Cambridge, Mass. There's also a heavy dose of nostalgia in the quest for a simpler, less expensive shoe. "We're getting some help from TV shows like `The Wonder Years,'" says Stephen Encarnacao of Converse, Inc., North Reading, Mass. The look has been gaining ground for several years, with Keds tracing the trend to 1986. But this spring, canvas footwear is being shown with dresses and even suits. "I think you will see it with long skirts, short skirts, pants and casual clothes for the weekend," says Kal Ruttenstein of Bloomingdale's, which is featuring the look in both its spring catalog and its New York display windows.
