ResumoDr. Reinhold's views are always worthy of careful attention and merit a detailed reply. Most of his objections to the use of the Soret band for correction of absorbance at the bilirubin maximum are quite valid, and in fact I'm afraid they apply quite generally to spectrophotometric estimation of bilirubin; it is not immediately apparent, however, that correction at 575 mµ will solve all the difficulties cited. Turbidities, for example, are a serious problem and can contribute appreciable error. Since fine protein turbidities show greater absorbence in the blue than at longer wave lengths, and since the Soret band is much nearer the bilirubin maximum than is the 575 mµ peak, turbidities are also undercorrected by the procedure of White, Abu Haidar and Reinhold—up to about 50%, as best one can judge from globulin turbidities produced by aqueous dilution.
