ResumoThe paper focuses on Herodotus' use of literary elements of “dressing” and “undressing” to illustrate themes of love, power, death, and gender identity in the stories of Gyges and Candaules of Lydia (1.8–12), Xerxes and Masistes of Persia (9.108–113), Periander and Melissa of Corinth (5.92η), and Dareios' ambassadors in Macedonia (5.18–20).
