ResumoThe transmission and distribution systems of the power system have gone through a whirl in technology on the facets of integrating communication technologies to the traditional electricity grid for better management of energy through the usage smart electricity meters at the consumer end. The objective of this work is to increase efficiency of communication network with focus in the network access (physical and data link) and internet layers of the standard TCP/IP network model. The proposed model describes the utilization of networks as prescribed by IEEE 802.11 standard (WLAN)—with smart energy meters across four regions in low-voltage consumer units. The design and analysis have been carried out using Packet Tracer by building a scenario of hierarchical network of four wireless local area networks and two wide area networks in infrastructure mode to check the capability of sending and receiving data packets from smart electricity meters to the distribution substation through a wireless network. The connectivity of the network is verified through Internet Control Messaging Protocol (ICMP) and even the verification of the requirements of time for data transfer and reception of mms' goose type has been done according to the IEC 61850 standard for smart grid.
