Resumo

This past year was marked by significant challenges all over the world as all nations fought the Covid-19 pandemic. While the academic world remains significantly affected by the impact of the pandemic on scientific research, journal editors and publishers have strived to maintain the flow of research papers, and the quality and rigor of peer-review and publishing turnaround times. While this did not go without a few hurdles and issues, we did our best to keep our workflow as efficient as possible. Our publisher's target from acceptance of Early View publication is 20 days, with the plan eventually to bring it down to 11 days. We are pleased to report that JCN's average time to Early View publication was 23 days last year, as such close to the publisher's target, in spite of Covid-19-related delays in our production pipeline. In fact, the average delay to publication in Early View increased through the first peak of the pandemic to about 33 days. Another factor that influenced the workflow was the introduction of an HTML on-line proofing system during the pandemic peak, which caused delays in production. JCN was pulled off this system in early September, and since then averaged 14 days to Early View. We will reintroduce on-line proofing once the global situation normalizes for our contributors and for our production system as it will eventually streamline the publishing process. During the pandemic peak we were very pleased to see a sustained intake of manuscripts at a time when our authors were in most cases prevented to work in their laboratories due to institutional shutdown of non-essential research. Pursuing our initiative to highlight important neuroscience topics in our journal we published a special issue honoring the remarkable career and legacy of Dr. Jack Pettigrew, a pioneer of comparative neuroscience who passed away in 2019. This special issue was organized under the stewardship of Drs. Paul Manger (University of the Witwatersrand), Marcello Rosa (Monash University), Mike Calford (Australian National University), and David Vaney (University of Queensland). It provides a reflection of the most eclectic interests of Jack Pettigrew, from the study of rock paintings, his life-long passion for comparative sensory neuroscience and the biology of consciousness, to his foundational role in the development of visual neuroscience in Australia. For this year we have two special issues in progress, one will be devoted on the comparative organization, physiology, and connectivity of the thalamus, under the leadership of Drs. William Guido (University of Louisville) and Andrew Huberman (Stanford University). The other is organized by Jeremy Schmahmann (Harvard University) and will honor the memory of the late Dr. Deepak Pandya whose pioneering work contributed enormously to our understanding of cortical and subcortical brain connectivity in non-human primates. As always, I am extremely grateful for the commitment and efforts of the contributors and Guest Editors of these special issues that fuel our journal's role in promoting novelty and scholarship in systems neuroscience. Like every year, I had the pleasure of presenting an award to a distinguished member of the neuroscience community during the Cajal Club Social on the behalf of JCN and its publisher, John Wiley & Sons. Usually this social event is held at the Society for Neuroscience annual meeting. This year unfortunately, the annual meeting had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Cajal Club organized an on-line social event. The 2020 Sanford L. Palay Award in Structural Neuroscience was, as such, presented in a most unconventional format, yet to much cheering, to Dr. Ann M. Graybiel, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for her ground-breaking work on the functional anatomy of the basal ganglia, and their role in learning, decision-making, affective states, and involvement in many neuropsychiatric disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, anxiety, depression, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and addiction. This is also the opportunity for the Editor-in-Chief to acknowledge of the tireless work of our Associate Editors and members of the Editorial Board who serve as the journal's best voice in the neuroscience community. We must announce the retirement from the board of Associate Editors of Dr. Paul Sawchenko, Professor Emeritus at the Salk Institute. Paul served as an Associate Editor of JCN since 1994. We will be forever grateful for his selfless dedication to our journal over these many years of service, his exceptional scholarship, kindness and fairness to authors, and the outstanding attention to details that characterized his evaluation of manuscripts. We are also most grateful to our Publishing Editor, Melissa Asaro, for her constant efforts managing, improving, and promoting our journal, and to our management team, Amanda Martinez, Reeni Sunder, and Shalima Begam, who oversee the processing of submissions and special issues, and the day-to-day operations of the journal, working closely with our contributors and the production workflow. Last but not least, I extend my warmest gratitude to the many colleagues, listed below, who committed their help to the peer-review process of manuscripts for the journal in 2020. As always, it is only through their scholarly dedication and professional expertise that JCN can maintain its reputation and quality standards. Patrick R.
