Resumo

Significance The CPI recommended that President Jair Bolsonaro be charged with nine crimes following an investigation of nearly six months. The report, issued by the CPI’s lead investigator, Senator Renan Calheiros, identifies crimes detailed in the Brazilian Criminal Code, the Impeachment Act and the International Criminal Court’s Rome Statute. Impacts The political fallout will be substantial but insufficient to advance the impeachment process in the Lower House. Bolsonaro will push for congressional approval of his pre-election spending measures to offset the report’s fallout. Bolsonaro will accelerate his efforts to join a political party to host his re-election bid and help deflect the fallout from the report.
