The present article is dedicated to the synchronic and diachronic analysis of two key concepts to understand the political and juridical performance of Afonso Arinos de Melo Franco: crisis of the law and law of the crisis.After the introduction of this character, explaining the circularity between his political and juridical positions, the meanings of both categories will be approached in light of the crises that the country experienced since the promulgation of the Constitution of 1946 until the advent of the military coup of 1964: the first would represent the insufficiency of legal mechanisms against social demands while the second would allow social evolution within legal frameworks.At the end, it will be rescued the creative role that Afonso Arinos ended up conceding to law, not without hesitation.
