With time, many scientific and technical terms changed their meanings. It is therefore advisable to introduce modern terms first and then mention older or different terms, usages. The following definitions are based, in general, on the recommendations of the polymer nomenclature committee of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Different terms are sometimes used by the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS). This chapter describes the development of the macromolecular hypothesis. The importance of statistics in polymer science was first recognized by Werner Kuhn. It is known today that statistical considerations play major roles in the constitution of macromolecules, molecular weight distributions, microconformations, polymer syntheses and reactions, macroconformations in solutions, melts, crystalline states, all physical properties of polymers. The chapter discusses the discoveries and inventions of macromolecules.
