Rockstar Games's Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2) is a major milestone for historical video games and has vast potential for scholars and teachers of U.S. history. RDR2 is an open-world, action-adventure shooter set in the American West and South circa 1899. Released to instant critical acclaim in October 2018, RDR2 had the biggest opening weekend in entertainment history, hauling in a whopping $725 million in global sales. For perspective, that figure dwarfs the highest-grossing weekend movie launch of 2018 (Avengers: Infinity War, $640.5 million). Three years on, RDR2 maintains a huge player base despite the fast-moving nature of the gaming industry.
