ResumoThe iridoids and secoiridoids form the largest class of naturally occurring monoterpenes. They are well represented in the Gentianaceae, a family of annual and perennial herbs, and are responsible for their bitter taste. A number of species have reputed medicinal properties; the biological and pharmacological activities of the constituent iridoids and secoiridoids include cardiovascular, stomachic, choleretic, antihepatotoxic activities and insect attractant and repellant properties. Reference is given to the analytical techniques used for iridoids, with special emphasis on hyphenated techniques involving HPLC. Different categories of iridoids, secoiridoids and their glycosides are also enumerated and their distribution within the Gentianaceae is given.
