ResumoThe majority of developmental and structural anomalies covered in this chapter are important although infrequently encountered. With the widespread use of upper endoscopy, recognition and understanding of both common and uncommon esophageal pathology are of relevance to clinical care. Embryology and normal gross anatomy and histology of the esophagus are reviewed as background pertinent to all esophageal disorders. Owing to a shared embryologic origin, congenital disorders affecting the esophagus often involve abnormalities of the respiratory tract. During embryogenesis, the process of elongation and separation of the trachea and esophagus can be disrupted. Esophageal dilation has been used in children and adults with success but esophageal perforation risk exceeds that for more common benign strictures. In contrast to the surgical management of other esophageal diverticula, esophageal intramural pseudodiverticulosis is managed medically.
