Resumo

Plagues upon the Earth: disease and the course of human history, written by Kyle Harper, starts with the discovery of fire and ends with the COVID-19 pandemic, which is to say that it covers the whole of human history. It is testament to Harper's command of his subject matter that the book never feels rushed. The author is a professor of classics and letters at the University of Oklahoma (Norman, OK, USA). In his previous work, The fate of Rome (2017), he explored the crucial role that viruses and bacteria played in the fall of the Roman Empire. He takes a similar approach in Plagues upon the Earth, only this time his canvas is considerably broader.
