Soil and Land Suitability Analysis

Resumo

During the construction of projects, the soil is one of the most important factors. Yet somehow it is neglected most of the time by contractors as they see soil analysis as a loss of funds. The soil properties and behavior are crucial in any project and civil engineers should know these beforehand to design a safe and durable project. So knowledge of soil index properties can help in decision making. This paper focuses on digital mapping of index properties of soil using GIS as a tool. The area around town Sangamner, Latitude:- 19°35'30.17"N Longitude:- 74°12'35.41"E was as the study area and QGIS 3.16.6 was used to analyses. A total of 15 sampling locations was selected and sampling was done by trial pit method. Various laboratory tests were conducted on these samples. Index and engineering properties were determined. This study focuses on the use of GIS for storing, analyzing, and displaying spatial data in the forms of digital soil maps and the effectiveness of GIS as a tool. The method suggested in this paper will help contractors and engineers in immediate decision-making about soil suitability and to get a preliminary idea about soil strata. This will serve as a guideline in designing the project reducing the cost of soil exploration and analysis.
