It is not an exaggeration to say that without volatiles in magmas the world would be a profoundly different place, and likely, life would have not flourished. Without volatiles in magmas, you would not be reading these pages. In fact, it was Earth degassing, mostly during volcanic eruptions, that provided the raw materials for the formation of the oceans and the atmosphere.
