ResumoLuke A. Nichter examines the career of Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. from his early formative years as a journalist to his long career as a politician and diplomat. While his claim that Lodge's role has been forgotten by historians who write about the Cold War might seem farfetched, Nichter offers a solidly researched thesis that places Lodge at the core of individuals who helped shape American foreign policy during World War II. Lodge certainly lived a privileged life, as inheritor of the Cabot and Lodge legacies dating back to the founding of the American colonies. Rather than focus on these advantages, Nichter discusses how Lodge used his position to promote the United States and the Republican party. Patriotism, loyalty, and a sense of responsibility pervade the book as Nichter recalls Lodge's bipartisan work with Franklin D.
